Penn State Harrisburg Ends Fall On High Note

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – After suffering its first loss of the season just one day earlier, Penn State Harrisburg responded in a big way in the team's fall finale on Wednesday, Oct. 9.  The Blue & White easily handled the visitors from Albright and swept the opposing Lions 9-0.

The Lions breezed through doubles play, winning all three matches.  The team's top duo of freshman Johnny Xue (Blue Hill, Maine / George Stevens Academic) and senior Vincent Lepore III (Chepachet, R.I. / Ponaganset) took down Albright's Matthew Muoio and Sean Purcell 8-1.  Senior Tyler Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg Area) and sophomore Ben Leibig (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon), Penn State Harrisburg number two pair, topped the visitors' Ken Richardson and Ian Moore 8-2.  The Blue & White's third team of sophomore Alex Koltun (Mount Gretna, Pa. / Cedar Crest) and freshman Chris Magee (Westminster, Md. / Manchester Valley)  bested Albright's Cain Walter and Thomas Werner 8-1 to keep the Lions perfect heading into singles play.

Penn State Harrisburg showed no letup in the individual portion of the outing.  Xue, the team's top singles man, had to work hard before topping Muoio 7-5, 6-4 and Leibig had a long first set before easily dispatching of Richardson 7-5, 6-0 in the number two slot.  Miller defeated Purcell 6-0, 6-4 in a battle of the squads' number three players while Koltun, the Lions' number four solo player, handled Moore 6-1, 6-1.  Magee and Lepore dropped just one game apiece in the five and six slots, with Magee topping Walter 6-0, 6-1 and Lepore disposing of Werner 6-1, 6-0.

The sweep of Albright helped to eliminate the bitter taste left in the Lions' mouths following a close loss to Goucher on Tuesday evening.  The victory improved Penn State Harrisburg to 3-1 on the year, a record that will remain intact for six months.  The fall portion of the Blue & White's schedule is now in the history books and Koltun, Magee and Lepore finish the slate undefeated in singles play, as does the team of Koltun and Magee in doubles competition.

The Lions will enjoy their winter break before next taking the court when the calendar changes to 2014.  The team's next match is scheduled for Mar. 18 when the men host former North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Penn State Berks.  Penn State Harrisburg's first Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) match will take place on Sunday, Mar. 30 when the Lions host Salisbury.
