How It Happened

No. 4 Franklin & Marshall needed a free kick in the 89th minute to escape the team's home turf at Tylus Field with a victory by the slimmest of margins over a gritty Penn State Harrisburg squad in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16.

Following a Penn State Harrisburg foul, the Diplomats (17-3) were awarded a free kick just outside the Blue & White 18-yard box with less than two minutes to play. The Dips' Jack Brandt emerged from a slew of F&M players to connect on his attempt and give the home team a lead it wouldn't relinquish with 1:25 remaining.

The Lions (15-6-1) earned a valuable one-man advantage late in the first half when Franklin & Marshall starting goalkeeper Christopher Amoruso received a red card for violently colliding with Daryl Lucas during a scoring opportunity with 3:06 left before the break.

The visitors nearly capitalized on the advantage twice late in the second half. Joey Aman made a pretty start-and-stop move to get free and fire off an attempt with his left foot that went just wide of goal in the 71st minute and a Toma Nichik header off an Aman cross sailed just over the crossbar nine minutes later.
