How It Happened
Penn State Harrisburg took Lycoming to the limit before falling by the slimmest of margins in a five-set thriller at the Capital Union Building on Thursday night, Oct. 31.
The Lions (14-12) fell behind and fought back to twice tie the overall match but eventually came up just a little short, dropping by the contest by set scores of 16-25, 28-26, 11-25, 27-25 and 10-15.
After a slow start cost the Blue & White the opening set, the home team responded by taking the second game in extra time. Penn State Harrisburg erased a 12-8 deficit midway through the second set and kept things close until back-to-back kills from Melanie Sheaffer and Anna Ruff sealed the win.
The Warriors (17-12) quickly took control in the third set en route to another victory but again the Lions bounced back in the fourth game. The visitors were up 24-21 in the final minutes but Brittany Ebaugh notched three kills and added a block assist in the closing moments to complete the comeback for the Blue & White.
The fifth and deciding set was a tight affair for much of the game but Lyco was to pull away down the stretch, scoring five of the final six points to escape with the narrow win.
Inside the Numbers
- Lycoming racked up 60 kills, compared to 49 for the Blue & White.
- The visitors recorded 17 service aces, while the Lions managed just four.
- Melanie Sheaffer led the way with a match-high 16 kills.
- Brittany Ebaugh and Cheyanna Buckingham tallied nine kills apiece, while Katelyn Kreider added eight of her own.
- Ebaugh was stellar at the net, posting four solo blocks and four block assists.
- Setters Alexis Imler and Alyssa Snyder each notched 20 assists.
- Corrinne Cooke racked up a match-best 25 digs, while Kreider (15), Imler (10) and Megan Morris (10) all posting double-digit digs.
Senior Night
Prior to Thursday's match, Penn State Harrisburg honored its three seniors in team captains Katelyn Kreider, Alexis Imler and Brittany Ebaugh as part of the program's Senior Night festivities.
