Lions Cruise to Victory in Home Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Lions ended their four game losing streak in their home opener against Valley Forge Christian Wednesday evening, Sep. 4 by combining a stout defensive effort with an aggressive offensive performance during the four game match.

The Lions were pushed by the Patriots in the highly contested first set, but were able to pull out the victory by the final score of 25-19. During the second set Harrisburg really picked up its defense led by junior Erin Goodyear (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) who led the team with 10 digs in the match.

After being down 2 sets Valley Forge bravely fought back to win the set largely in part to the effort of senior Courtney Farabee who led the team with 29 digs, they were also aided by some unforced errors from the home team. During the final set of the match, the Lions put together a dominating performance both offensively and defensively as they took the final set of the match 25-11. The set and game was clinched when the serve by sophomore Katie Shek (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) swiftly flew by the Valley Forge defenders for an ace.           

Though this win was a total team effort there were some pretty gaudy individual performances. Firstly, senior Elizabeth Findley (New Providence, Pa. / Solanco) led the game with 19 assists, mostly to senior Chidere Igwe (West Orange, N.J. / West Orange) and freshman Marion Chlipalce (Cape Coral, Fla. / Oasis Charter) led the game with 11 and 9 kills respectively.

Harrisburg is in action again this Saturday when they host a tri-match with Penn College and King's College that is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
