Lions Drop a Pair of Weekend Matches

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team took part in two matches on the campus of St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, Sep. 8.  Unfortunately, the Lions were swept 3-0 in both contests with the first loss coming to Ferrum College and the second to St. Mary's.

In the opening match against the Panthers, the ladies pushed their opponents past the 25-point mark and into extra play for the third time this season.  But for the third time this season, the blue and white fell just short, losing 28-26, 25-14 and 25-14.

Freshman Olivia Umoren (Quicny, Mass. / North Quincy) racked up the most kills of any Penn State Harrisburg player with seven.  Senior captain Miranda Jumper (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) and junior Chidere Igwe (West Orange, N.J. / West Orange) chipped in with four each.

On defense, it was freshman Melissa Ganz (Weston, Fl. / Cypress Bay) who dug out the most balls with 12 while Jumper followed closely behind her with 11 digs.  Sophomore Erin Goodyear (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) did her part with nine.

Setters Beth Findley (New Providence, Pa. / Solanco) and Katie Shek (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) led the assists category with nine and eight respectively.

In their second match of the day, the Lions had a little tougher go of it against St. Mary's.  After a lackluster first set, the ladies fought hard to make it respectable but eventually fell to the host team 25-6, 25-20 and 25-16.

Umoren again led the way offensively with three kills, as did Igwe with the same amount.  The blue and white only managed seven total assists with Shek racking up the most of any Penn State Harrisburg player with three.  Ganz dug out an impressive 13 balls while Findley followed behind her with five digs.

The Lions are still looking for their first win of the young 2012 campaign but they'll finally get a chance to play a match on their home court.  Penn State Harrisburg's next match comes in the home opener on Tuesday, Sep. 11 when the ladies host Trinity in a non-conference contest.  The match gets underway at 7 p.m.
