Women's Tennis Caps Spring Break With Convincing Win

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team wrapped up its week-long spring break trip in South Carolina with a convincing 8-1 victory over Sweet Briar on Thursday afternoon, March 7.

 

All three doubles matches were won by the Lions (4-6), led by Sydney Nye and Courtney Bennett's combined 8-6 victory in the No. 1 contest. Elysse Mellott and Soorya Chitibabu teamed up for an 8-4 win in the No. 2 outing, while Abigail Clifford and Erin Harnish made quick work of their SBC counterparts with an 8-1 decision in the third matchup.

 

The momentum continued into singles play, as the Blue & White took five of six solo matches from Sweet Briar. Claire Hackenberg was impressive in the No. 2 spot, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory in her outing. Mellott was also strong, clinching a 6-1, 6-0 win the No. 3 contest. Harnish held on for a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the fourth singles matchup and Bennett completed a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 5 slot. Chitibabu finished things up by securing a 6-2, 6-1 decision in the No. 6 outing.

 

The Lions will now return home and have more than a week of rest before taking part in their next contest. Penn State Harrisburg hosts Penn State Berks at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon, March 16.
