Women's Tennis Knocks Off MAC Commonwealth Champs

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg improved to .500 on the young season with a 6-3 victory over local foe Lebanon Valley at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 2.

 

The Lions (2-2) rode a strong start in doubles play to an impressive win over the defending MAC Commonwealth Champions (0-3). Penn State Harrisburg's top duo of Sydney Nye and Elyse Mellott defeated LVC's Melanie Haas and Emily Wilczek 8-6, while Maria Torre and Makiya Binion made quick work of Rachel Duong and Meridyth Sanders in an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 outing. The third pairing of Courtney Bennett and Claire Hackenberg completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Leah Wingert and Elizabeth Drda.

 

The Blue & White rode the early momentum to three victories in singles action, with Torre defeating Duong 6-4, 6-3 in the second outing, Hackenberg picking up a 6-1, 7-6 decision over Wilczek in the No. 3 matchup and Binion earning a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory in the No. 6 contest.

 

Penn State Harrisburg will look to build on the most-recent effort when the ladies host Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon.
