Penn State Harrisburg Winter/Spring Moments Countdown #4

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – In 2009, Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team became the first squad in school history to win a conference championship as an NCAA member.  In recent years, the men's tennis team stole some of that thunder by winning back-to-back North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships in 2011 and 2012 and earning an NCAA Division III championship tournament berth.  As far as today's top ten list entry goes?  This one's for the girls.

On Apr. 28, at the 2013 NEAC individual championship tournament, Penn State Harrisburg sophomore Gabby LeGendre (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) put the ladies back on top when she emerged victorious in the number one singles players' bracket, earning her the moniker of NEAC Player of the Year.  She disposed of Penn State Abington's top singles player Jenny Abraham in the first round before topping the conference's defending Player of the Year in Penn State Berks' Crystal Hitz, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.  LeGendre's history making afternoon also earned her a well-deserved spot on the NEAC's all-conference first-team.

LeGendre and Hitz have had quite the rivalry dating back to 2012.  Harrisburg and Berks' top singles players are 2-2 against each other over the past two years.  LeGendre won their first-ever meeting when Berks' ace retired while Hitz exacted revenge by topping LeGendre in last season's number one singles tournament championship match.  In 2013, Hitz defeated LeGendre in their regular season matchup before LeGendre exorcised last year's demons by besting Hitz to become Player of the Year.

In addition to LeGendre's incredible accomplishment, Penn State Harrisburg saw two more players earn all-conference honors.  Senior Theo Avramidis (Glenwood, N.J. / Vernon Township), the Lions' number two solo player, went 1-1 in the number two bracket, winning her first round matchup before falling in the title match.  Her efforts earned her a spot on the NEAC's all-conference second-team.

Freshman Amanda Herr (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) picked up the league's third-team all-conference honor despite being the lowest-seeded player in the number four singles player bracket.  She fell in the first round before bouncing back and winning the consolation match in four sets.

We're getting ever closer to the top spot.  Check back tomorrow for the number three entry in our list of the top ten most memorable sports moments from the 2012-13 Winter/Spring seasons.  Hint time.  Well (or Will), it's number three, three, three, three, three, three, three…
