Ladies Taste Defeat For the First Time In 2013

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – After winning its first three matches of the spring season, Penn State Harrisburg suffered its first loss of 2013 on Sunday, Apr. 7.  The ladies fell to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) West Division foe Penn State Abington by a 6-3 score.

The Lions got off to a strong start thanks to winning two of the three doubles matches.  Harrisburg's top pair of sophomore Gabrielle LeGendre (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) and senior Theodora Avramidis (Glenwood, N.J. / Vernon Township) took down Abington's Jenny Abraham and Alexandra Murianka 8-5 while the home team's number two duo consisting of freshmen Amanda Herr (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) and Anne Schu (Orwigsburg, Pa. / Blue Mountain) picked up an 8-6 victory over Abington's Lori Phillips and Evgenia Nigay.

Unfortunately, the Blue & White failed to hold that advantage once singles play got underway.  LeGendre was the only Penn State Harrisburg player to win a solo match.  The Lions' top player bested Abraham 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the number one showdown.

Avramidis fell to Abington's Phillips 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the number two slot and Herr dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Olya Popili in the third spot.  Nigay topped Schu 6-1, 6-1 in the number four matchup, Murianka defeated sophomore Silva Vachhani (Enola, Pa. / East Pennsboro) 6-1, 6-0 in the five spot and sophomore Bridgette Sneed (Washington, D.C. / Friendship Collegiate Academy) was swept by Carly Powell 6-0, 6-0 in the number six pairing.

The loss ended Harrisburg's recent three-game win-streak and dropped the ladies to 5-6 on the season.  The Blue & White are now 2-1 in conference play.  Penn State Harrisburg will next take the court on Thursday, Apr. 11 when the Lions travel south to take on another NEAC opponent in Lancaster Bible.
