Lions Sweep to Pick Up Second Victory

BALTIMORE, Md. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team was perfect on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 10.  The Lions traveled to Baltimore and swept the hosts from Notre Dame of Maryland 9-0 to earn the squad's second win of the season in the penultimate match of the fall.

The blue and white got off to a flying start in doubles action thanks to the number one pairing of Gabrielle LeGendre (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) and Theodora Avramidis' (Glenwood, N.J. / Vernon Township) 8-1 victory over the Gators' top team.

Alejandra Portillo (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra) and Tricia Stone (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown), the Lions' number two duo, used an 8-5 besting of Notre Dame's second-ranked pairing to increase their squad's overall advantage while the team of Casey Stetler (Lititz, Pa. / Manheim Central) and Amanda Herr (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) picked up a win due to forfeit.

Penn State Harrisburg kept the momentum rolling in its favor once singles action began.  LeGendre, the Lions' number one, bested her Notre Dame counterpart 7-5, 6-0 while the number two player in Avramidis downed the second-ranked Gator 6-2, 7-5.

Portillo, Stetler and Stone all made quick work of their opponents in the number 3-6 slots while Herr was victorious at the number six position due to another Notre Dame forfeit.

The win improved Penn State Harrisburg to 2-4 on the year and could prove to be the spark the team needed now that only one match remains before the winter hiatus.

The Lions last match of the fall season takes place this Saturday, Oct. 13 when the ladies host St. Mary's at the Hoverter Tennis Complex.  The match gets underway at 2 p.m.
