Men's Tennis Sweeps Albright; Ladies Drop Second-Straight

READING, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's tennis program enjoyed a split against Albright on Monday, Sep. 24.  The men's squad took down the home team in a 9-0 sweep while the ladies fell to the opposing Lions 6-3.

In doubles action, the men's top pairing of Ben Leibig (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) and Evgeny Matigullin (New Bloomfield, Pa. / Susquenita) downed Albright's number one team 8-1.  Penn State Harrisburg' number two team of Vinnie Lepore (Chepachet, R.I. / Ponaganset) and Zachry Warriner (Montrose, Pa. / Montrose), as well as the third group of David Pottle (York, Pa. / Central York) and Vishnu Gopalakrishnan (Ashburn, Va. / Briar Woods) swept their opposition 8-0 to give the Lions an early lead.

The blue and white slammed the door on Albright in singles play.  Leibig bested the opposing Lions' number one player Ruicong Lui 6-1, 6-3.  Matigullin, the number two man, and Warriner, the number six, each topped their opponents by a 6-1, 6-1 margin.  Penn State Harrisburg's number three in Lepore, number four in Pottle and number five in Tyler Loy (Annville, Pa. / Annville Cleona) all swept their Albright counterparts 6-0, 6-0 to wrap up the untainted victory.

The women had a tougher go of things on this afternoon.  Only the Lions number three team of Casey Stetler (Lititz, Pa. / Manheim Central) and Amanda Herr (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Central) was victorious in doubles play, downing their opponents 8-3.

Herr was also victorious in singles action as the blue and white's number six, besting Albright's Christina Peacock 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.  Number five player Tricia Stone (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) was the only other player to emerge with a win on the day as she took down the opposing Lions' Erin Sullivan 9-7 in an outing that was called due to darkness.

The win by the men improves the defending North Atlantic Conference (NAC) champions' record to 2-0 on the young season while the loss by the women drops them to 0-2.

Both of Penn State Harrisburg's tennis teams will be back in action this Thursday, Sep. 27 in the Lions' home opener when they host Goucher at the Hoverter Tennis Complex.  The matches get underway at 3:30 p.m.
