Francis Scores Twice, Helps Lions Reach 3-0 In NEAC Play

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The Penn State Harrisburg women's soccer team has moved into winning-season territory and hopes to stay there. The ladies' 7-1 win over Wells College on Sunday, Sep. 23 put the Lions at 4-3 on the season.  More importantly, it improved them to 3-0 in North Eastern Atlantic Conference (NEAC) play.

The blue and white have had to take a few lumps this season, including starting out 0-2 after playing against Dickinson College who is now 6-1 as well as the College of Wooster. Since that opening weekend, it has been a much smoother ride for the Lions as they have improved steadily.

The contest against the Express allowed for a multitude of goals and good plays. Things got started just seven minutes in when Nikki Francis (Pottstown, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) scored one of her two goals on the day off of a Mae-Lynn Gonzalez (Blakeslee, Pa. / Pocono Mountain West) throw-in.  Lindsey Haldeman (Grantville, Pa. / Hershey Christian) got her first goal of the season off a well-placed corner kick that found the back of the net.  Despite more opportunities, the game remained 2-0 going into halftime.

Francis started the second half the same way she did the first; scoring early for the blue and white.  This was followed by Lyndsay Naughton (Reading, Pa. / Reading Central Catholic) who played her best game of the season and was rewarded with a goal of her own.  Fay Ansary (Hummelstown, Pa. / Hershey) got her fifth of the season making the score 5-0.

Danell Engle (Halifax, Pa. / Halifax) gave her dad a great birthday present as she scored her first goal of the season, not to mention made him a cake for the team tailgate after the game.  Fatoumata Camara (Riverdale, Md. / Northwestern) got the last goal of the day and also her first of the season to cap the Lions latest victory.

"The girls scored a lot of goals this weekend but my favorite play of the game came when we switched the fields as all the central midfielders combined for one touch passes to get it from sideline to sideline," said Penn State Harrisburg Head Coach Clay.  "We can't let a couple good games go to our heads.  We have to continue putting in the effort at practice and get ready for a tough road trip next weekend"

The Lions head to Utica, N.Y. for their only overnight trip this season.  They face SUNY IT Saturday, Sep. 29 and SUNY Cobleskill Sunday, Sep. 30.
