How It Happened
Penn State Harrisburg tied a school record for made 3-pointers in a game, powering to a 70-60 victory over York (Pa.). Five different Lions reached double figures, highlighted by 18 points for Shanique Mattis. Briana Davis also had an impressive showing, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm early in the first quarter, with the Lions taking the lead on a corner 3-pointer from Kendis Butler. Laurel Amey would then connect from deep to give Harrisburg an early 8-7 advantage. With a minute remaining in the opening quarter, Mattis banked home a contested triple, upping the Lions' lead to four heading to the second quarter.
The Spartans would respond by going on an 11-0 run to open the second quarter, recapturing the lead. Mattis answered, however, storming to the basket and converting the layup. Davis found a wide-open Amey who connected on a triple, cutting the Spartans lead to two. Later in the quarter, Davis would connect on a trey of her own, pulling the Lions within one point. Butler closed out the half with a deep 3-pointer, tying the game at 24 heading into the break.
Harrisburg's offense exploded in the third quarter, powered by six 3-pointers. Rachel Miller, Butler, Davis and Amey all connected from deep as the Lions scored 26 points in the period. The home team also held a decisive advantage on the boards in the quarter, outrebounding the Spartans 11-to-5. The Blue & White held a 12-point advantage entering the final quarter.
The Lions continued to play solid defense, frustrating the Spartan attack. Amey knocked down the Lions program-record tying 16th 3-ball of the game midway through the final quarter before Penn State Harrisburg closed out the game making a handful of free throws en route to finishing off the contest.
