Lady Lions Fall to Southern Virginia

Middletown, Pa.- Saturday February 6th, after a big win against Frostburg State this week, the Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team looked to get their third straight win against Southern Virginia. The Knights early lead proved too much for Harrisburg, the Lions fell 87-68.

The visitor's grabbed an early lead against Harrisburg in the opening minutes of the first. Senior Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y / Milton Hersey) sank two straight layups to get Harrisburg on the board. The Knights knocked down their first of eight three's in the first half to extend their lead to 11-6. Kaitlyn Carmo (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra Area) hit a three followed by a second three from Rachel Miller (Lebanon, Pa. / Cedar Crest) to bring the Lions within two. Freshman Shanique Mattis (Philadelphia, Pa. / Central) came out hot in the second quarter, scoring two straight baskets in the first minute. Harrisburg went on a six point run as the second quarter progressed thanks to three baskets from Brittany Ulrich (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon). The Lions trailed, 44-35 heading into halftime.

Southern Virginia continued to lead throughout the third quarter. As the third quarter came to a close, Harrisburg fought to score three straight baskets to try and tie the game up. Southern Virginia went on a nine point run in the final quarter to extend their lead. Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) was able to hit two three pointers to bring the Lions 15 points behind the Knights. Harrisburg made several more efforts to come back but the visitors stood strong. Yanich and Ulrich led for the Lady Lions with 12 points each.
 
Penn State Harrisburg will host Marymount (Va.) on Wednesday February 10th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
