St. Mary's Stops the Lions

Middletown, PA.- Saturday January 16th, this afternoon the Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team faced St. Mary's (Md.). The women dominated the first half but could not stop the Seahawks second half surge. The visitors went on to win 56-54.

The Lions took an early lead thanks to Rachel Miller (Lebanon, Pa. / Cedar Crest) sinking the first three pointer of the day. Sophomore Alexis Nolan (Beltsville, Md. / St. Vincent Pallotti) added to Harrisburg's lead with three points due to being fouled as she went up for a layup and then making her foul shot. Just a few minutes later, Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) dropped her first three of the day. Harrisburg led going into the second quarter, 21-9. The second quarter proved to be more difficult for both teams. Only four points were scored in the first seven minutes of the quarter. Brittany Ulrich (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) put Harrisburg back on the board with her first of two threes for the day. The Lions were unable to score for the remainder of the half while the Seahawks went on a nine point run before the half.

Both teams came out ready to play in the second half. Nolan got Harrisburg on the board with her second three of the day. St. Mary's (Md.) fought hard to tie the game back up within the first five minutes of the third quarter. Becca Bailey (Tobyhanna, Pa / Notre Dame East Stroudsburg) regained the lead for Harrisburg with a three and a bucket back to back. Both teams were tied at 42 as the final quarter got underway. With only two minutes to go, Harrisburg was on top by four points thanks to Yanich hitting two threes in a row. The Seahawks were back on top as the game concluded due to being fouled three separate times by Harrisburg in the last minute of play. Yanich led for Harrisburg with 11 points and two rebounds. Defensively, Katie Schwenk (Lykens, Pa. / Upper Dauphin) led with ten rebounds.

Harrisburg will host their next three games at home. The women will play Wesley on Wednesday January 20th at 6 pm.
