Penn State Harrisburg Cruises Past Southern Virginia

Buena Vista, Va.- Saturday January 9th, this afternoon the Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team traveled to Southern Virginia for their sixth conference game of the season. Harrisburg dominated all four quarters and went on to win 78-61.

Harrisburg was off and running, connecting on its first two baskets of the game from Rachel Miller (Lebanon, Pa. / Cedar Crest) and Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township). Junior Kaitlyn Carmo (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra Area) hit her first three of the day as the first quarter came to a close with Harrisburg leading by six. Carmo came out hot in the second quarter with a basket and two foul shots back to back. Her effort forced SVU to take a time out and regroup. The time out proved to be a good decision for the home team as they went on to score nine straight points as play got back underway. Miller stopped the Knight's run by stepping up to hit her second three of the night. Harrisburg led 41-33 as the clock counted down to halftime.

Carmo and Miller helped Harrisburg extend their lead in the opening minutes of the second half by scoring a combined total of 11 points in the first two minutes. Although the Lions led by 15, Southern Virginia did not back down. The home team battled back to tighten Harrisburg's lead to nine as the final quarter began. Penn State Harrisburg dominated offensively in the fourth quarter while also playing solid defense as a team. Harrisburg limited Southern Virginia to only 13 points in the final quarter as they cruised to their second conference win of the year. Harrisburg scored 27 points alone due to Southern Virginia turning the ball over 35 times throughout the game. Carmo had a season high game with 23 points and seven rebounds. Defensively, Kiara Carter (Bronx, N.Y / Milton Hersey) came up big for Harrisburg with 14 rebounds.

Penn State Harrisburg will be on the road once again on Wednesday January 13th. The Lions will travel to Marymount (Va.) for a 6 pm start.
