Carter Leads Harrisburg to First Conference Win

Middletown, Pa.- Wednesday December 2nd, after a tough loss to Misercordia, the Penn State Harrisburg women's basketball team was looking to win their first conference game of the year against Frostburg State. Frostburg State came back to take the lead in the fourth quarter but Harrisburg held on and won 53-52. 

The Bobcats came out strong in the first quarter by leading 6-0 after the first few minutes. The Lions did not let this early lead stop them from fighting back. Senior Jasmine Yanich (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) put Harrisburg on the board by hitting her first three pointer of the game. Freshman Rachel Miller (Lebanon, Pa. / Cedar Crest) went on to hit a three in the last few seconds of the first but Frostburg State led 15-10 going into the second quarter. Junior point guard Precious Shirk (Hyattsville, Md. / Bladensburg)  and Senior Lucky Snypse (Philadelphia, Pa. / George Washington Carver) led the Lions in the second quarter with a total of five points.Throughout the second quarter, Penn State Harrisburg dominated and limited Frostburg State to only six points. Yanich hit a bucket  to tie up the game at 20. Just a few seconds later, Miller was fouled while driving to the basket. Miller gave Harrisburg their first lead of the night after hitting her foul shot straight through the basket. Harrisburg led at the end of the first half, 29-21. 

Although Harrisburg led at the end of the third quarter, 43-32, Frostburg State went on to score 17 points in the final quarter. As the last minute of play approached, the visitors were leading 52-51. Senior Kiara Carter (Bronx, NY / Milton Hershey) drove to the basketball to make the game winning layup.  Carter had a double-double for the day with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Yanich was close behind with 12 points and six rebounds.

Penn State Harrisburg will travel to Mary Washington on Saturday December 5th for their second conference game of the year. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm.
