Softball Falls to Penn State Altoona In Doubleheader Action

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's softball team dropped a pair of non-conference road contests to Penn State Altoona on Friday afternoon, March 18. The Lions fell 4-2 in the opener before dropping a 10-2 decision in the nightcap.

GAME 1

Penn State Harrisburg (4-3) was edged 4-2 by Penn State Altoona (3-5) in the first game of a road doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

Olivia Herncane drove in both of the Lions runs, while Madelyn Krantz's double was the team's lone extra-base hit. Carissa Yeager allowed just one earned run on the day.

Penn State Altoona got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first thanks to a bases-loaded walk but the visitors answered back in the top of the fourth when Herncane singled up the middle to drive in Krantz following her leadoff double, as well as Madelyn Lehigh after she reached base with a bunt single.

The home team responded by tying the game after a Penn State Harrisburg error in the bottom of the frame. Another error for the visitors proved costly, as the hometown Lions took advantage of a two-out miscue and used a 2-RBI single to pull ahead 4-2.

Penn State Harrisburg opened the final frame with a leadoff single but were unable to bring pinch runner Krysten Moore around.

GAME 2

Penn State Harrisburg (4-4) scored first but high-scoring third and fourth innings from Penn State Altoona (4-5) proved too much for the visitors to overcome in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

Madelyn Lehigh opened the game with a leadoff double and eventually scored from third base thanks to a wild pitch. A pair of runners moved into scoring position with two away but the visitors were unable to take advantage by tacking on any more runs.

Penn State Altoona broke through in the bottom of the third, using four hits and a pair of Penn State Harrisburg runs to score five runs. The visitors left two more on base in the top of the fourth and the home team made them pay in the bottom half when they plated three more runs thanks to three hits, including a pair of doubles, and a walk.

Emma Einarson provided a spark in the top of the sixth when she singled to left center and drove in Steph Reider and two outs but Penn State Altoona used five hits to score two more runs and end the game in the sixth.
