Softball Team Drops Two to Wesley

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg looked to gain some ground on Friday when they hosted Wesley College in a conference double-header matchup, but were unable to come away with a win, Falling to the Wolverines in both contests.  They struggled to find any offense in game one, but battled hard in the second contest before succumbing to their opponents in extra innings.

Here is how each game played out:

Game 1

Penn State Harrisburg began the first contest by surrendering a run on three different errors before recording an out.  A sacrifice fly an out later would score a second run in the inning for the Wolverines, but Allison Hartman put the team on her back and helped the team escape with limited damage, recording two quick outs before any more runs could score.  2-0 Wolverines

Back-to-back doubles by the Wolverines would tally another run in the top of the third inning.  3-0 Wolverines

In the top of the fifth inning with runners on second and third bases and not outs, a Nina Marcano sacrifice fly to center field would score the first of two runs.  An error on the tail end of the play would allow the second and final run of the inning to score.  5-0 Wolverines

A single, fielding error, and another single—all with two outs—would add three more runs to the Wolverines' score in the top of the sixth inning.  8-0 Wolverines.

Down eight runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Lions were unable to shrink the lead, therefore inducing the mercy rule and ending the game early.

Game 2

The top of the first inning was another struggle defensively for the Lions, giving up four runs in the frame.  With runners on the corners and one away, Devin Mackay would hit a single through the left side, scoring the runner from third base.  Brooke Retkowski would swat a triple an out later that was good for two RBIs before advancing to home on error at third base.  4-0 Wolverines

The Lions were determined to not let this contest get away from them as well, and answered back in the bottom half of the first inning.  With one out and runners on second and third, Amanda Hartman grounded into a fielder's choice that brought Kayla Seyfert home from third base.  Emily Parmer would also score on an error in the following at-bat.  4-2 Wolverines

The Blue and White would tie the game up in the bottom of the third inning.  An Erelle Sowers triple would bring Jenna Rupakus all the way home from first base for the first score.  Amanda Hartman would then single Sowers home an out later for the second.  Tie 4-4

A Lauren Hoffman two-out, 2 RBI triple would put the Wolverines back on top in the top half of the fourth inning.  6-4 Wolverines

A Carlee Gochenaur single with two outs would score Amanda Hartman from second base in the bottom of the sixth inning, closing the gap to one run.  6-5 Wolverines

In the bottom of the seventh inning with the game on the line, Dominique Emmett would come through for her team in the clutch, tying the game on a solo bomb over the left field fence that eventually led to extra innings.  Tie 6-6

The excitement would be short-lived, however, as the Wolverines battled back and scored three runs in the top half of the eighth inning.  After a valiant effort, the Lions were unable to overcome a deficit for the third time in the game, falling to Wesley in part two.
