Ladies Off to a Roaring Start

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The Penn State Harrisburg Lady Lions kicked off the 2011 season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Snowbird Tournament in early March. The tournament gave the Lady Lions an opportunity to get in the swing of things before heading into local non-conference action at home. Although the Lady Lions left the tournament with only one win over Bluefield College, the experience they gained will prove to be beneficial over NEAC opponents later in the season.

The Lady Lions also faced Kings College, Dakota State University, Eastern University, conference foe SUNY IT, Randolph College, Penn College and North Carolina Wesleyan at the Snowbird Tournament.

After returning from the warm southern weather, Penn State Harrisburg travelled to Penn State Altoona for a double header. The Lady Lions dropped both games, 0-2, 1-9.

After a string of tough losses the Lady Lions bounced back to grab the biggest victory in Coach Tonya Dengler's Penn State Harrisburg career. On Saturday, March 19, the Lady Lions hosted local foe Juniata College and swept them in both games, 7-5 and 8-5 behind a strong offensive effort. In game 1, Sophomore transfer Kara Boyd (Alexandria, PA/Juniata Valley) recorded 4 RBI's and scored 2 runs to lead the Lady Lions. Boyd's pitching effort in game 2 helped lead the Lady Lions to victory.

Courtney Miller (Mifflintown, PA/Juniata) recorded a game high 11 put outs from the catching position and notched one RBI in game 2 to pace Penn State Harrisburg.

The Lady Lions will look to continue their two game win streak this weekend as they host Penn College on Friday, March 25. Penn State Harrisburg fell to Penn College in their first at the Snowbird Tournament 2-4. The Lady Lions will open up NEAC competition on Saturday, March 26 as they host Wilson College at 1:00PM.
