Men’s Team Finds Victory While Women’s Team Falls Short in Road Matches Versus Stevenson

STEVENSON, Md. – The Penn State Tennis Teams traveled to Stevenson University on Friday afternoon to take on the Mustangs.  The men's team battled to a 6-2 victory while the women's team struggled, falling to the home team 9-0.  Here is how each side played out:

Men's Doubles:

The top doubles pairing of Rafael Fernandes and Austin Pokopec were defeated by the formidable duo of Bryan Gieselman and Wornden Ly, 8-2.  Pranoy Banka and Ryan McCurdy notched themselves a victory versus Peter Appiah and Douglas Vaughn, 8-1, while John Parola and Benjamin Rusling defeated the Mustangs' Kevin Slujitner and Tony Beres, 8-3.

Men's Singles:

The Lions were victorious in five or their six singles matches.  Austing Pokopec defeated Bryan Gieselman handedly, winning 6-2, 6-2.  Rafael Fernandes also won his match, but with a little less ease, as he took Wornden Ly into a tiebreaker set, winning in 10-2.  Pranoy Banka, Benjamin Rusling, and John Parola each won their matches as well.  Tony Beres defeated Ryan McCurdy for Stevenson's only singles victory.

Women's Doubles:

The women's top duo of Sydney Nye and Maria Torre played a tough a competitive match against Jenna Skove and Kelsi Mentzer, but ultimately fell by a score of 8-6.  TeanChang Lou and Shevia Ansary also fell, 8-6, while Sheila Ansary and Sara Ghika struggled through an 8-1 defeat.

Women's Singles:

Sydney Nye and Jenna Skove played the most competitive match of the day, going three sets.  Ny won the first set, 6-1, but Skove won both the second and third sets, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively, to earn the win.  TianChang Lou also took her opponent, Kelsi Mentzer, to three sets before falling in a 10-6 tiebreaker.
