Penn State Harrisburg Men Clinch First Round Bye

Fredericksburg, Va-  Coming into Wednesday, Penn State Harrisburg had clinched a CAC playoff birth, but with so many teams bunched up at the top, there was no certainty how the seedings would play out.  After a 2-2 tie at Mary Washington, the Lions finish as the number two seed in the CAC and are set to host their second round playoff game November 5th at 6pm.

The Blue and White came into Wednesday's matchup with conference foe Mary Washington in a heated battle for a top spot in the CAC playoffs.  With this thought in the back of their heads, the Lions wasted no time as they pounced on the Eagles early when senior Jon Willingham (Harrisburg, Pa. / Sci-Tech High) scored off an assist from Aaron Kline (Lebanon, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) in the sixth minute.

Mary Washington battled back from their 1-0 deficit to score two straight goals, putting Penn State Harrisburg in a 2-1 hole with only 15 minutes left to play.  Willingham was not ready to let the Lions lose their final match of the year with so much on the line.  He was able to find the net a second time with less that eight minutes to play to send the game into overtime.  The two teams battled through twenty mintues over extra time to finish in a 2-2 draw.

Coach Donnelly had this to say following Wednesday's match, "This in an incredibly tough conference, excellent teams from top to bottom.  We have achieved an awful lot, but this is no time to reflect.  We have earned a little break, and then we have another mountain to climb starting next week.  This is a fantastic group with a great team spirit and I am so proud of what they've done, and the manner in which they have gone about it. "

Penn State Harrisburg is set to host their first Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer playoff match in program history.  They will host the winner of the #3 seed Frostburg St. versus #6 seed St. Mary's game, which will be played this Saturday.  The Lions will look to rest up and prepare for their showdown at home Wedneday November 5th at 6pm.
