Lions Drop Double OT Heartbreaker In Season Finale

Lions Drop Double OT Heartbreaker In Season Finale

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's 2013 season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday night, Oct. 30 when the Lions fell to Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent Marymount (Va.) 3-2 in a double overtime thriller.  After claiming its first lead of the contest with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Blue & White fell to the Saints when the visitors netted the game-winner with just 50 seconds remaining in the second extra session.

Marymount got on the board first when Ahmed Elmanialawy connected on a high arcing shot from inside the Lions' 18-yard box that lofted over the head of Penn State Harrisburg goalkeeper Deven Gerhart (Newmanstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) and into the back of the net in the game's 16th minute.  Onar Yousefi assisted on the goal.

Blue & White senior captain Tommy Miller (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra Area) rose to the occasion ten minutes later.  Following a Marymount foul inside the Saints' box, Miller was awarded a penalty kick.  Playing his last game at Penn State Harrisburg, Miller made his mark when he struck his shot past a diving Marymount goalkeeper in Logan Cropper, tying the game at one-apiece in the 26th minute.

Both defenses clamped down and kept the other from adding to its total before halftime.  Midway through the second half, however, Penn State Harrisburg sophomore Jimmy Bilger (Slatington, Pa. / Northern Lehigh) followed a teammate's deflected shot and fired his attempt past Cropper, giving the Lions a 2-1 advantage in the 72nd minute.

Unfortunately for the home team, that advantage would not last long.  Just five minutes later, the Saints were awarded a free kick following a Penn State Harrisburg penalty and the ensuing shot was played by a Lion defender but ended up in the Blue & White net.  The own goal proved to be the equalizer Marymount needed to extend the match as the score would remain tied after 90 minutes of play.

Neither squad gained an advantage in the first extra session and it was on to a second sudden death overtime period.  Penn State Harrisburg clamped down for nine minutes but with less than a minute standing between the Lions and at worst a draw, Marymount's Nick Gruber made a crisp, accurate pass from midfield that found Elmanialawy in front of the Blue & White box.  Elmanialawy cut the ball back to his left, shook a Penn State Harrisburg defender and struck his attempt past Gerhart and into the back of the net, giving the Saints the victory with just 50 seconds left on the clock.

In a physical game that saw 43 combined fouls and six total yellow cards, the Lions outplayed Marymount in nearly every facet.  Penn State Harrisburg outshot the Saints 14-5 and earned six corner kicks compared to just three for the visitors.  The only area that Marymount outshone the home team was the one that mattered most: the scoreboard.

The dramatic defeat dropped the Lions' final record to 3-13-1.  Despite outplaying the Saints and coming oh-so-close on numerous occasions this fall, Penn State Harrisburg finishes the season without a CAC victory.
