MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Today we're going to make you count. Not to ten. Not to 100. 1,000? That's more like it. Easy, you say? Fine. Go ahead and do it for a second time. If you thought counting to 1,000 took more time and effort than you'd like, imagine the time and effort put in by Penn State Harrisburg senior basketball players Jordan Gatchell (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) and Steph Yetter (Thompsontown, Pa. / East Juniata).
It's not often that a school has a player reach the 1,000 career point milestone. But for two players to get there during the same season? Now that's something else. Gatchell and Yetter's incredible individual feats earned the number eight spot on Penn State Harrisburg's list of the top ten Winter/Spring sports moments from 2012-13.
Gatchell became just the fourth men's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point milestone while Yetter became just the second women's player to score get there and the first since Penn State Harrisburg began play as a member of the NCAA. Gatchell netted his 1,000th point from the free throw line on the road against Lebanon Valley on Jan. 2. Yetter also reached the 1,000 mark from the charity stripe but her historic moment took place in front of her friends and family at the Capital Union Building (CUB) on Feb. 13.
Gatchell finished his playing career with 1,180 points, the second highest total of any player in school history. His outstanding senior season earned him a spot on the North Eastern Athletic Conference's (NEAC) all-conference first-team. Yetter ended her playing days at Penn State Harrisburg with 1,052 points scored; the program's all-time leading scorer since the school's acceptance as an NCAA member.
It's safe to say that as the years go by, more names will be added to the list of 1,000-point scorers. But two in the same season? Only time will tell…
