Lions Knock Off E-town In Season Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Pa- Penn State Harrisburg started off the 2011 season with a bang by traveling to Elizabethtown College and upsetting the Blue Jays 76-63 on Tuesday, Nov. 15.  Freshman guard Amani Glenn (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) had a coming out party and recorded team-highs with 22 points and nine rebounds.  The impressive victory was the Lions first non-conference win since defeating Rutgers-Camden on January 20, 2010.

Another CD East grad in Dave Reisinger (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) added 14 points and a team-high five steals.  The senior forward also drained two shots from beyond the arc.  But the biggest 3-point field goal of the night came courtesy of Manheim's Jordan Gatchell (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central).  The point guard's clutch bucket gave the Lions a 69-61 lead with two and a half minutes remaining in the game, effectively sealing the victory.  The huge bucket capped off his ten-point performance.  Steel-High's Kenton Alston (Harrisburg, PA/Steel-High) chipped in with a cool 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three blocks.

Despite the Blue Jays' offensive output from the tandem of Andrew Mantz (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy) and Ben Cable (York, PA/West York) (33 points between the two), the Lions were able to foul out Elizabethtown's dangerous guard Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) late in the second half.  As the clock wound down, the home team fouled and the blue and white made them pay by converting their free throws down the stretch to put it away.

The Lions will look to follow up their statement victory with more wins in the Dickinson College tournament in Carlisle this weekend before their first home contest on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
