Penn State Harrisburg Intercollege Athletics launches Faculty Athletic Liaison Program

The Penn State Harrisburg Office of Intercollege Athletics has worked with the college’s faculty members to develop a new initiative called the Faculty Athletic Liaison Program

The program is designed to support student-athletes by increasing communication and strengthening connections among student-athletes, coaches, and faculty. By creating a stronger network around the student-athletes, the initiative hopes to maximize the potential for each student-athlete to reach his/her goal of excellence in both academic and athletic pursuits.

“This program was a great idea that originated from the Faculty Senate Athletics Committee.  We see it as another way to bridge the gap between athletics and academics here on campus,” Rahsaan Carlton, director of athletics, said.  “Ultimately, we think it's a great opportunity for faculty members to learn more about the daily lives of our student-athletes.  At the same time, it allows for our student-athletes and teams to interact with faculty members outside of the classroom setting which can be an enriching experience.”

Rebecca Weiler-Timmins, instructor in kinesiology and chair of the Athletics Committee, has been integral to the new program’s development.

“The Faculty Athletic Liaison program creates a support network and an academic/athletic connection for student-athletes and faculty members,” Weiler-Timmins said. “I am excited about the program, not only for the connections, but also the ability for the faculty to get involved in the unique aspects of being a part of an athletic team.  The balance of academics and athletics provide an equation for success for student-athletes.”

The program’s flexibility encourages a wide range of activities. Faculty members can pick activities that meet their scheduling needs, including attending practices or games, counseling athletes with academics and other issues, assisting in recruiting, and building relationships with players on and off the field or court.

“The Faculty Athletic Liaison Program provides a nurturing support network for student-athletes as they navigate their academic degree programs combined with the rigors of athletics” said Dr. Roderick L. Lee, associate professor of information systems and faculty athletic liaison member.

Penn State Harrisburg coaches are also looking forward to the new program its opportunities.

“We feel very lucky to have Allen Urich, instructor in kinesiology, involved with the team,” Adam Clay, head coach of the women’s soccer team, said.   “Having a faculty member that team members can reach out to for help is a huge advantage for our program.”
