How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg fell 16-5 to No. 3 Christopher Newport in the third and deciding game of the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship Series at CNU's Captains Park on Friday afternoon, May 11.

The Lions (32-13-1) struck first when a Travis Van Houten single to left field drove in Miguel Torres from second base in the top of the opening inning but the Captains (35-7) responded when Nick DiNapoli hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame.

The home team added to its advantage with two more runs in the bottom of the second but the Blue & White answered in the top of the third, with Chase Smith's RBI single scoring Torres for the second time before Bret Williams launched a two-run blast over the fence in left center field to pull the visitors even midway through the stanza.

CNU put together a four-run bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Joe Cutchins but Penn State Harrisburg put another run on the board in the top of the fifth when Ryan McSorley's single to second base helped push Williams across.

Unfortunately for the Lions, that's all the scoring they'd accrue, as the Captains closed the game with eight consecutive runs.

At the Plate

- Travis Van Houten finished 3-for-5 with one run driven in.

- Miguel Torres and Ryan McSorley had multi-hit games, with Torres adding a double, a triple and two runs scored.

- Bret Williams drove in a team-high two runs thanks to a home run in the third inning.

- Tucker Ell earned an at-bat late in the contest and hit a double.

- Tyler Jackson, Kieran Kearns, Tyler Stabley and Thomas Elliott each made relief appearances.

- Reliever Brian Owens got the win for CNU, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing one run on five hits.

Around the Diamond

- Friday's contests saw Bret Williams become the first player in program history to tally 200 career hits.

- The Lions dropped an 8-4 decision to CNU in game two of the CAC Championship Series earlier on Friday.

- The Blue & White left nine runners on base in game three after stranding 11 runners in game two earlier in the day.

- Penn State Harrisburg committed a pair of errors, while the Captains had one.
