Lions Fall In Extra Innings To Knights

Harrisburg, PA. – The Penn State Harrisburg men's baseball team faced off against the Arcadia Knights on Wednesday May 9th.  Both teams came into the game ranked in the region with Arcadia at the #5 spot, 25th nationally, and the Lions at #12 regionally.  The Knights recently won the MAC conference title and earned a spot in the NCAA tournament, but the Lions knew this game could have tournament implications.  Harrisburg could win the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship this coming weekend at Salisbury, but if they fall this weekend today's result could mean everything for their NCAA hopes. 

 

Arcadia 14 vs. Penn State Harrisburg 12 (11 innings)

 

Records:

Penn State Harrisburg: 31-11 Overall

Arcadia: 29-13 Overall

 

How It Happened:

The Lions started the day strong scoring three runs in the first two innings of play while also holding the Knights scoreless.  Down 3-0 to start the third inning, Arcadia found their rhythm for a big the biggest inning of the day.  The visitors scored five runs with the help from a Fulmer homer run to left field that scored two.

 

Penn State tied the game at six a piece after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with some timely hits and good base running.  Both teams battled back and forth throughout the rest of the game.  In the top of the ninth, the Lions had two untimely errors that allowed Arcadia to take a three run lead going into the final at bat for Harrisburg.

 

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Lions put together a few hits and refused to quit.  A Brett Williams single, scored two runs and tied the game at 12 forcing extra innings. Harrisburg felt like they had the game in hand in the tenth, but a very questionable catcher interference was missed and the Knights were able to save themselves with a double play to end the inning. 

 

In the end, Arcadia scored two in the eleventh and the Lions were not able to get one final hit to bring in the tying runs to continue to extend the game.

Special Notes:

Prior to the start of the game today, Head Coach Ryan Bown was recognized for reaching his 100th win as a coach at Penn State Harrisburg.  Bown hit the 100 win mark on March 30th in a 13-6 win over Marymount University.
