Baseball Splits to Averett; Grab Second Win of the Year

Danville, Va.- The Penn State Harrisburg baseball team split against Averett on Sunday March 5th. The Lion's fell 9-3 in game one before dominating game two to grab their second win of the year 11-3. 

Game 1: Averett 9 Penn State Harrisburg 3

The home team came out strong in the bottom of the first inning, jumping out to an early 4-0 start. Averett scored two runs off of a wild pitch and a throwing error by third base. The Lion's cut their lead to only one in the third thanks to a fielding error by third base as TJ Mullaly ran home. Justin O'Dell and David Klein scored off a single to right by field by Zackary Koroneos. Harrisburg was unable to get on the board again for the remainder of the game as Averett scored five more runs. In the bottom of the third, Dallas Smithers reached home plate due to a throwing error by left field. Shortly after, Averett added one more run before the end of the inning off a single to left field. The home team added three more runs off two singles in the fourth and fifth inning.

Game 2: Penn State Harrisburg 11 Averett 3

Game two proved to be a success for the Lion's as they racked up 11 runs, their largest win of the 2017 season so far. The majority of Harrisburg's runs came in the top of the third. With bases loaded, Brett Arney scored off a walk followed by David Klein coming home due to a while pitch by Averett. At the end of the third Chris Iocca doubled down the left line, sending Bret Williams and Justin O'Dell to home plate. In the fourth, Tom Denniston scored on a throwing error by the pitcher and David Klein reached home on a single to the short stop by Bret Williams. By the end of the fourth the Lion's led 6-1. Tyler Fetherolf added one more in the fifth thanks to a double to left center by Chase McKinney. Justin O'Dell was sent home on a fielders choice and the Lion's final run of the day came in the 7th with a single up by the middle by Bret Arney. Brandon Riggs registered his first win of the year on the mound with 4 strike outs and only 2 runs. David Klein, Bret Williams, and Chris Iocca each registered two RBI's in the Lion's final match of the day.
